Description

The building at 2 Stramongate is a shop with a restaurant above, built around 1859 by R.C. Shaw for J. Collinson. It replaced the King’s Head Inn and was set back to widen Branthwaite Brow. The building is constructed of snecked rubble with quoins, and features a rounded south-west corner. It has a moulded cast-iron gutter with dentils, and a graduated slate roof with stone chimneys, one mid-way along the roof and one at the end. The building is three storeys high, with cellars.

A restaurant entrance is located off Branthwaite Brow, with a panelled door in a corniced, pilastered wooden surround. The main shop entrance to the corner has a recessed part-glazed double door and a fanlight, with a three-light arcaded window to the left and a two-light window to the right. A secondary entrance opens off Stramongate, with a recessed part-glazed door and a cellar grille below a four-light arcaded window to the right. The shop front is within a corniced wooden surround with panelled pilasters. The arcaded shop windows have foliate decoration to the spandrels. There are six sash windows on each floor above.
