Description

This milestone, dating from the early 19th century, was erected for the Alston Turnpike Trust. It is made of stone, approximately 2 feet high and 1.5 feet wide, featuring a semicircular top. The milestone is painted white, with carved sans-serif lettering on the front face highlighted in black, indicating the distances to Nenthead (½ mile), Cowshill (5 miles), and Stanhope (16 miles).
