Description

This milestone, dating from the early 19th century, was created for the Alston Turnpike Trust. It is a single stone that stands approximately 2 feet high and 1.5 feet wide, featuring an elliptical top. The stone is painted white, with carved sans-serif lettering on the front face that is highlighted in black, indicating the distances to Alston (2 miles) and Penrith (17 miles).
