Description
Hillcrest Hotel is a hotel built in the mid-18th century, with later alterations. A 1775 plan of Alston indicates that the building originally had end wings projecting on the west side, which were likely removed when the road was widened in the 19th century. The central section remains intact. The structure is made of ashlar with a chamfered plinth, while the ends are blocked with coursed squared rubble and have quoins. The roof is covered with 20th-century artificial slate and features corniced stone chimneys, along with stone coping and kneelers at the north end. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a total of eight bays. All windows are sashes, with the attic windows being smaller. The entrance is accessed through a 20th-century flat-roofed porch located at the right-hand bay of the central block, which also has a stepped buttress to the right. There is a late 19th-century canted bay on the extreme right, featuring a single pointed window on each side. Single-storey additions to the north and south ends are not included in this description.
