Description
This milestone, dating from the early 19th century, is located set into the rounded corner of a wall to the west of the Town Hall in Alston. It was created for the Alston Turnpike Trust and stands approximately 4 feet high and 2 feet wide, featuring an elliptical top. The stone is painted white, with the carved sans-serif lettering highlighted in black, indicating the distances to various locations: Alston, Hexham (23½ miles), Penrith (19 miles), Brampton (20 miles), Middleton (22 miles), and Stanhope (21 miles). Only the face of the milestone is visible as it is embedded in the wall.
