Description

This milestone, located to the east of Bayles, is possibly from the 19th century and was created for the Alston Turnpike Trust. It is a single stone standing approximately 2.5 feet high, featuring two angled front faces and an angled top. The stone is painted white, with carved sans-serif lettering in black that reads: "MELMERBY 9" at the top, "PENRITH 18" on the left, and "ALSTON 1" on the right. A benchmark has been added to the top at the rear.
