Description

This milestone, located east of Hartside Cafe, dates from the early 19th century and was likely erected for the Penrith-Alston Turnpike. It is made of whitewashed stone and features a round top with squared stone. The face of the milestone has incised lettering that reads "ALSTON 5, PENRITH 14" in four lines, highlighted in black, with a benchmark above.
