Description

This is a milestone located to the south-west of Hartside House, dating from the early 19th century and commissioned by the Alston Turnpike Trust. The milestone is a single stone, approximately 2 feet high and 1.5 feet wide, featuring an elliptical top. It is painted white, with carved sans-serif lettering on the front face that is highlighted in black, indicating the distances to Alston (3 miles) and Penrith (16 miles). A benchmark has been added at the top of the stone.
