Description
The Alston War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1922, with additions for the Second World War. It is prominently located at the junction of the A686 and A689. The memorial features a Westmorland limestone obelisk that stands about 3 meters high, set upon a tall plinth with a moulded cap and carved wreaths on each of its four faces. The base has a deep moulded foot and is supported by a four-stepped square foundation. Surrounding the monument is a semi-circular area paved with red sandstone slabs, bordered by a wall at the back and a kerb along the roadside. The front of the plinth bears an inscription in incised black lettering that reads: "THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THOSE OF ALSTON WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918 AND 1939 - 1945 THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE" followed by names of the fallen. Additional names are inscribed on the sides of the memorial.
