Description
This is a milestone located to the west of Rise Head, dating from the early 19th century and commissioned by the Alston Turnpike Trust. The stone stands approximately 2 feet high and 1.5 feet wide, featuring an elliptical top. It is painted white, with carved Roman lettering on the front face highlighted in black, indicating the distances to Alston (2 miles) and Middleton (20 miles). A benchmark has been added at the top of the stone.
