Description
This milestone, dating from the early 19th century, was erected for the Alston Turnpike Trust. It is a single stone, approximately 2 feet high and 1.5 feet wide, featuring an elliptical top. The stone is painted white, with carved Roman lettering on the front face, highlighted in black, indicating distances to Alston (8 miles) and Middleton (14 miles). A benchmark has been added at the bottom.
