Description
This is a milestone dating from the early 19th century, created for the Alston Turnpike Trust. It is made of a single stone, approximately 2 feet high and 1.5 feet wide, with an elliptical top. The milestone is painted white, although the paint is partly damaged. The front face features carved Roman lettering, which is highlighted in black, indicating distances: "TO ALSTON 7 MILES" and "MIDD(LETON) 15 M(ILES)".
