Description
The memorial pump and canopy, dated 1877, is located on the north side of the A689 in Nenthead, Alston Moor. It features a cast-iron cylindrical pump that is approximately 2.5 feet high, fluted, and includes a bucket rest and a lion's head spout. The pump is supported by four columns that display Classical, Egyptian, and Gothic detailing, which hold up a ribbed dome topped with a finial. The foundry mark is likely from Geo. Smith, Sun Foundry, Glasgow. Each side of the structure has a semicircular arch with cusping, inscribed with the words: "ERECTED BY R.W. BAINBRIDGE ESQ OF MIDDLETON HOUSE." Above each arch is an oval plaque that reads: "IN COMMEMORATION OF A TESTIMONIAL PRESENTED TO HIM & MRS BAINBRIDGE BY THE EMPLOYEES OF THE LONDON LEAD CO. & OTHER FRIENDS SEPT. 28TH 1877." The corners of the canopy feature antifixae with obelisk finials, and there is a small crocodile on top of each cap internally. An identical memorial canopy can be found in Middleton-in-Teesdale, County Durham, which has an ornamental fountain instead of a pump.
