Description

No. 27 Stricklandgate is a shop located on a corner site in Kendal, built in 1822 on the site of Richard Crowle's house, who served as Recorder of Kendal from 1752 to 1757. His coat of arms is displayed between the upper floors of the corner bay. The building was remodeled in the mid to late 19th century. It features incised stucco and a cornice over the ground floor supported by richly ornamented consoles. There is an eaves cornice and a moulded cast-iron gutter on brackets. The roof is hipped and covered with graduated slate, with stone chimneys at the mid and end. The structure has three storeys with a cellar and consists of six bays arranged in a 2:1:3 pattern.

The corner bay includes a part-glazed door and a rectangular fanlight framed by a lugged Egyptian architrave, with a sash window on each floor above. On the Stricklandgate elevation, there is an arcaded shop window with a cellar window below, and two sash windows on each upper floor. The Market Place elevation features a part-glazed double door with two small shop windows to the left, and a part-glazed door on the first floor above, with a single sash window on the first floor and two sash windows on the second. There are blocked windows on the left side of each floor.
