Description
The War Memorial in Kendal was erected in 1921 and features later additions. It has a life-size bronze statue of a World War I infantryman in marching order, positioned on a monolithic, tapered limestone plinth that is approximately 5 feet high and square in shape. The west face of the plinth displays an inscription in raised uncial lettering, while the north, south, and east faces each feature a bronze panel listing the names of those who fell in World War I. A bronze laurel wreath is placed over each corner of the plinth. The base of the plinth has a concave-moulded top edge and includes a bronze panel on each face that lists the names of those who fell in World War II. The memorial stands on two sandstone steps and is surrounded by a 20th-century chain fence that is about 18 inches high.
