Description
The War Memorial in Sevenoaks is a tribute to those who served in the First World War, unveiled on 29 October 1920 and designed by Mr. Walker of Chelsea. It features a bronze statue of a soldier in khaki, standing with his hands resting on an upturned rifle, mounted on a splayed rectangular pedestal. The names of the fallen are inscribed on all four sides of the pedestal, while the north and south sides display bronze reliefs depicting scenes from the Navy and Air Force during wartime. The memorial bears the inscription: "To keep in mind those from this place who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1918." An additional splayed extension on the pedestal lists the names of those who died in the Second World War. The memorial was funded through a house-to-house collection that raised over £5,000 and was unveiled in a ceremony attended by notable figures, including Lord Sackville, Lt Col J D Laurie, and the Bishop of Rochester. It is recognized for its high-quality figurative bronze statue and the accompanying reliefs.
