Description

Townhead and the adjoining barns are a farmhouse and barns/byres dating from the early 18th century, with a date of 1715 discovered by the owner, although it is not visible. The barns are dated 1745 and feature the inscription "TEMPUS PRO FERET OMNIA," which has been recut in the 20th century. An extension to the barns is dated 1812 and bears the initials S.R.

The building is constructed of squared and coursed red sandstone rubble with V-jointed quoins set on a chamfered plinth and has a shaped eaves cornice. The roof is made of graduated greenslate with coped gables and kneelers, featuring a brick chimney stack on the left and an ashlar stack on the right. The extension is built of similar stonework and has a Welsh slate roof.

The farmhouse is two stories high and has two bays, with a lower two-story, single-bay extension to the left. There is an off-centre 20th-century door in a wooden surround beneath a pointed stone lintel. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are set in painted stone surrounds. The extension retains its original chamfered entrance surround, although the 20th-century door has been relocated there. The extension also features larger sash windows in painted stone surrounds.

The barns/byres are constructed of red sandstone random rubble and have a corrugated asbestos roof. They are arranged in an L-shape, adjoining the left side of the house. The central plank doors are set in a round arch, with the date and inscription positioned above. There are flanking plank doors in stone surrounds, with plank loft doors above. A right-angle extension is located over a round-arched cart passageway that runs through the building to the right. There is a projecting cart entrance with plank doors on the left, a byre entrance on the right, and slit vents on two levels. A lean-to plank extension at the front and brick extensions to the left are considered to be of no interest.
