Description
Green Lane Cottage is a house and attached cottage located in Dalston. The cottage dates from the late 17th century, while the house was built in the late 18th century and has undergone 19th-century alterations. The cottage features painted clay walls that have been repaired with red sandstone rubble, a thatched roof at the front, and corrugated iron at the rear, along with a tall brick chimney stack.
The house is constructed of red sandstone random rubble with flush quoins and has a Welsh slate roof, with the lower courses made of sandstone slates. It has original brick chimney stacks. The single-storey cottage has three bays, with an original plank door in a wooden surround to the right and a central plank door with a small chamfered stone surround to the left. There is a 2-light stone-mullioned window at the extreme left. The main entrance is through a late 18th-century stone porch with a sandstone slab roof, featuring a 6-panel door in a stone surround.
The house itself is two storeys and consists of a single bay, with a two-storey, single-bay extension to the right. The entrance to the right has been blocked with larger sandstone slabs in a stone surround. The house features sash windows with glazing bars set in stone surrounds. A prominent central joint in the stonework indicates that the left side of the house was built first. Inside the cottage, the structure is of full cruck construction, and there is a red sandstone stepped mounting platform to the right adjoining the cottage.
