Description
Church Cottage is a cottage that dates from the 18th century or later and was remodeled in the early 19th century. It is constructed of sandstone and red brick, with the external walls rendered. The roof is covered with plain tiles and features two brick gable end stacks, along with a dentilled eaves band. The building is two storeys at the west end and single storey plus garrets at the east end, with a single storey outshut at the rear.
The south elevation has two irregular bays. The central doorway has a 19th-century half-glazed door and a rustic-style mid-19th-century timber porch with fretted bargeboards and fishscale tiles. The lower parts of the sides have been replaced with brick. To the left of the doorway, there is a three-light casement window under a segmental head, with a similar window above it under a flat lintel. To the right, there is another three-light window under a flat lintel, with a similar window above that rises into a gabled dormer.
Inside, the cottage has a two-room plan on either side of a small entrance hall. The left-hand room features a salt cupboard to the left of the fireplace. The rear wall of the main house is made of large squared blocks of sandstone. The cottage is listed for its group value only.
