Description
Mayfield House is a house that was likely remodeled in the mid-19th century, originally built in the 18th century. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar quoins and dressings, topped with a slate roof and featuring brick ridge stacks.
The northwest elevation has two storeys and consists of a 1:1:4 bay arrangement. It includes glazing bar sash windows with shaped lintels and raised keys, with the right-hand bay being blind. There is a projecting two-storey bay to the left of the center, which has three-light plate glass sashes. The entrance features a portico with an openwork parapet above a half-glazed door and fanlight, supported by panelled square piers at each corner.
On the south elevation, there are also two storeys with a 1:1:1 window arrangement. The windows are plate glass sashes with shaped lintels that are grooved as voussoirs and have raised keys. The central bay is recessed and flanked by two-storey canted bays, each with first-floor sill bands. The central entrance has a glazed door with a fanlight and a Corinthian portico, distyle in antis, which supports a first-floor balustraded balcony. The first floor features round-headed French casements with raised keys and triangular pediments above. The openwork parapet extends over the flanking full-height bays, with panelled square piers at each corner and open ogee fretted arches above the main window ranges. This house was formerly the owner's residence for Mayfield Mills, which is not included in the listing.
