Description
Rose Stile and Rose Stile Cottage are a house with a cottage attached, located on Middle Green in Romaldkirk. The house likely dates from the late 17th to early 18th century, and was significantly altered in the late 19th century. The cottage was built in the mid to late 18th century.
The house is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble, with dressed sandstone detailing. It is a two-storey, three-bay building. A late 20th-century porch has been added to the right side. The ground floor has 12-pane sash windows with flush lintels and sills. The upper floor windows are replaced 4-pane sashes, which have projecting, chamfered sills. The roof is stone-flagged, with stone chimney stacks at each end, topped with bands. A truncated external chimney is visible on the right return.
The cottage is slightly lower and also two storeys high, with two bays. It features raised-and-chamfered quoins on the left side. A partly-glazed 6-panel door is set within a moulded surround on the right side. The windows are 12-pane sashes in similar surrounds with projecting sills. The left gable has a coped edge with a shaped kneeler. A stepped and corniced chimney stack is located at the left end.
Late 20th-century additions to the house on the left end and to the rear of the cottage are not considered to be of architectural interest.
