Description
High Croxdale Farmhouse and the adjoining flanking barns date from the early 18th century, with the barns built around 1760. The farmhouse is constructed from narrow handmade brick in an irregular bond and features brick chimney stacks. The barn on the left has a rubble return and a Welsh slate roof, while the house and barn on the right have ridged concrete roof tiles.
The two-storey farmhouse has three original blocked window openings on each floor. There is a central late 20th-century door flanked by replaced 12-pane sash windows in 19th-century openings, which have flush stone lintels and projecting sills. The steeply-pitched roof has swept eaves and partly rebuilt end stacks, with tumbled-in brick gables.
The single-storey, two-bay barns project forward and feature raised stone quoins at the ends and dentilled brick eaves. Each barn has a central blocked doorway set in a raised ashlar surround with oversized alternating jambs and a triple keystone. The barn on the right has a steeply-pitched roof and a tumbled-in brick gable, while the barn on the left has a roof with a slightly lower pitch. There is a 20th-century lean-to shed on the right return, and derelict L-plan farm buildings at the rear of the barn on the left, which are not of special interest.
These barns were added to the farmhouse to create a symmetrical landscape feature that terminates the avenue running east from Croxdale Hall.
