Description

Mid Farmhouse and adjoining barns date from the mid-17th century, with later additions including one barn dated and inscribed "H.H. 1831" for Henry Howard. The buildings are constructed from red sandstone rubble, featuring grey sandstone flush quoins and dressings. They have a graduated greenslate roof with banded sandstone ashlar ridge chimney stacks. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has three bays, with a two-bay barn on the right under a common roof and a left barn that is partly domestic, creating an overall L-shape.

The house has an off-centre 20th-century door set in a 19th-century stone surround. It features large mullioned-and-transomed windows, with those on the ground floor positioned under a continuous hoodmould. Each stone of the window surrounds is initialled "R.S." along with a number or date that is too weathered to read. The right barn has a central sliding door and flanking casement windows, all beneath slit vents. The left barn consists of two sections; the part closest to the house, likely built in the early 18th century and now partly domestic, has a 19th-century extension under a common roof. The older section includes a single-storey pent extension and right sash and casement windows in 19th-century stone surrounds. The gable wall, which is continuous with the house front, features a two-light window beneath a casement window, both in stone surrounds. The barn extension has a large projecting segmental cart doorway with a keystone that is dated and inscribed, along with upper slit vents and a small left belt-driven threshing wheel.

The rear of the farmhouse includes a 19th-century extension. The rear of the right barn has plank doors and a loft doorway, all in chamfered stone surrounds, with slit vents above. The rear of the 1831 barn features a plank door in a rebated surround under slit vents, along with a right pent extension. Inside the farmhouse, the ground floor has beamed ceilings, and the former kitchen contains a large 17th-century segmental stone-arched fireplace and a left cupboard recess. The lean-to garage and 20th-century extensions to the 1831 barn are not of interest.
