Description
The stable block located southeast of Johnby Hall dates back to two different periods. The oldest section is inscribed with the initials W & BW, indicating it was built in 1675 for William and Barbara Williams, who were the stewards for the Earl of Arundel on the Greystoke estate. This part is constructed from pink sandstone rubble, while the later 18th-century extension, built for the 11th Duke of Norfolk, is made of dressed pink sandstone. Both sections feature flush quoins and have graduated greenslate roofs with coped gables and kneelers.
The building is two storeys high, with the original section being a single bay and the extension consisting of a slightly taller two-storey, four-bay structure. The central entrance features a chamfered segmental archway beneath the date panel, along with a small opening that has a chamfered surround, flanked by slit vents. The extension includes an off-centre segmental carriage arch and several flat-headed doorways, all with stone surrounds. The windows are casement style with glazing bars, some featuring radial designs in round heads, although those above are now boarded over, all set in stone surrounds.
The right return wall shows 17th-century openings, including a two-light window and slit vents in the gable. The left return wall has two levels of blocked square windows beneath oval vents and a heart-shaped gable vent. Historically, the building served as stables, a coach house, and a pigeon loft. The right lean-to extension is not of particular interest.
