Description
Cotehill War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, located in the churchyard of St John the Evangelist Church on Peter Gate in Cotehill, Cumbria. It is prominently positioned at the west end of the church, facing the main road. The memorial features a Latin cross with the word "PEACE" at its center, set on a straight, tapering shaft, a four-sided plinth, and a single-stepped base. The plinth includes inscriptions in leaded lettering.
The inscription reads: "PEACE // IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE OF / THE UNDERMENTIONED MEN OF / COTEHILL WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE / GREAT WAR 1914–1918 / (NAMES) / “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE” // WORLD WAR II / 1939 – 1945 / THESE ALSO GAVE THEIR LIVES / (NAMES) / (NAME) / KILLED BY ENEMY ACTION."
