Description
Flookburgh War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1922, located in the churchyard of St John the Baptist Church on Station Road in Flookburgh, Cumbria. It is prominently positioned between the apse end of the church and the main road, making it visible from the road and adjacent to the churchyard paths. The memorial features a floriated cross approximately 4.5 meters tall, which has an ornate head and is mounted on a slender tapering shaft. The shaft is decorated with incised circular designs that spiral down its length, and it is topped with a moulded cap and foot. This stands on a circular plinth that displays inscriptions in relief-carved and incised lettering, all set upon a two-tiered base. The main inscription reads: "HONOUR TO THE MEN OF THIS/ PARISH WHO LAID DOWN THEIR/ LIVES THRO’ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ THE PEACE OF GOD TO ALL WHO/ BY THEIR SUFFERINGS STROVE/ TO GIVE THEIR COUNTRY PEACE// (NAMES)."
