Description

Cote House is a farmhouse that was formerly a bastle house, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. The walls are made of large blocks of squared red sandstone, with the front covered in cement rendering, and it has a green slate roof with rendered brick chimney stacks. The building is two storeys high and has four bays, along with a single storey extension built up the slope to the west, all under the same roof, which is not typical of bastle houses. The extremely thick walls, rendered to conceal alterations, make interpretation challenging, but the structure retains its original form with 18th and 19th-century window openings and a 19th-century roof.

The east gable, facing the river, features small original windows that have been filled in, and the upper wall has been rebuilt, with a gable coped with a kneeler. The width of the building has been increased at the rear by the extension, which has a roof that is carried over. There are doorways between the rear extension and the original building, as well as between the single storey extension, which are likely original. All windows and doors are from the 20th century. The single storey extension is whitewashed, and internally, the roof is supported by three trusses on stone corbels: one with a tie beam and king post, and two with cambered collar beams. The building may have been comparable to The Stonehouse in Naworth East Park.
