Description

Byre Hill Farmhouse is a farmhouse and barns, likely once a row of estate cottages for Corby Castle, dating from the mid-17th century. The previous listing mentions medieval masonry and timber, which refers to reused materials and does not indicate the building's date. The structure features thick coursed sandstone rubble walls and a slate roof, which was probably originally covered with stone slates, and has only one chimney stack. The arrangement of filled windows and doors suggests that it was originally three or four two-storey cottages under a common roof. The small filled windows have mullions with chamfered dressings, and the door lintels have chamfered points and square heads. Many 19th-century windows and doors have been added, making it challenging to interpret the building's original use. Currently, it functions as one farmhouse on the left, with barns and haylofts on the right, all still under a common roof. It likely became an estate farm in the early 19th century.
