Description
Castle Farmhouse, including attached outbuildings, is a farmhouse with origins dating back to the 17th century, and possibly earlier to the 14th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and features a plain tile roof. The building has a distinctive courtyard plan and is characterized by a massive canted and stepped rubble buttress stack with a brick chimney on the west gable, and a similar stepped rubble stack with a brick chimney on the east gable.
The exterior of the farmhouse consists of two storeys, an attic, and a cellar, with a three-window range on the front. The central window is a late 18th or early 19th century two-light casement, flanked by a similar three-light casement on the right and a three-light mullion and transom light with a canted casement on the left. There are three timber-framed gabled dormers with metal casements and leaded lights, supported by shallow jettied trusses, one of which is dated 1677. The ground floor features two casements and a mullion and transom leaded light with a central casement to the left, all with stone sills and a battered plinth.
On the left side, there are two ashlar lights leading to the cellars. The rear of the farmhouse includes an early 19th century verandah supported by four stone Tuscan columns, above which are two late 19th century casements set in moulded wood architraves, alongside a 20th century part-glazed door with an overlight.
To the right rear, there is a wing with a two-light casement above a cross-window featuring a metal casement, and a brick end stack. Another wing has a semi-dormer above an ashlar segmental arch of a carriageway, with barred and shuttered openings above two possibly medieval openings that have coved ashlar reveals and traces of relieving arches. This wing also has ventilation holes, a battered plinth, and a lean-to. The gable of the returned side features a wood mullion light with a stone sill.
At the west end of the range, there is a rubble buttress stack with 19th century barred lights in chamfered ashlar cases. The courtyard front of the rear wing displays various lights and openings, with stone steps leading to a granary, three medieval pointed arches, and a 19th century arch, as well as chamfered ashlar lights and a blocked 14th century mullion window with a hoodmould. There is also a lean-to with a cider-mill.
Inside, the farmhouse boasts massive chamfered ceiling beams and deep splayed openings.
