Description
The Upton Pyne War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1920 and altered after the Second World War. It is made of pale grey Devon granite and is located in the churchyard next to the entrance of the Church of Our Lady, not far from a late medieval churchyard cross.
The memorial features a plain Latin cross with a gently tapering shaft, standing on a substantial square plinth and a two-stepped octagonal base. It reaches a height of approximately 3.65 meters.
On the west face of the plinth, the main inscription reads:
"TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ THIS CROSS IS ERECTED IN PROUD AND/ GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE MEN OF/ THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR COUNTRY AND HOME IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918/ (NAMES)/ THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE."
Additionally, there is an inscription on the south face of the plinth that states:
"2ND WORLD WAR 1939 - 1945/ (NAME)."
