Description
Horwill Down is a farmhouse built around 1830-1840, constructed from stuccoed brick with exposed brick stacks on each side, topped by a Welsh-slate roof. This late Regency style house features a central stair hall and a four-room, double depth plan, arranged over two storeys. The symmetrical front has five windows, all of which are 12-light sashes with glazing bars. It is adorned with rusticated quoins and scored ashlarwork. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door flanked by rectangular fan and side-lights, and is sheltered by a contemporary wooden porch. This porch has a tented lead roof supported by a simple wooden crown, a shaped valance, panelled and glazed sides, and slender shafts around an iron post at the corners. The roof is hipped on both sides, with projecting eaves supported by shaped brackets. The original iron gutter features lion's head joints. Inside, the farmhouse retains its original open string stair with stick balusters and a curtail step, along with other contemporary fittings.
