Description
New Bridge is a road bridge built between 1844 and 1851, located over a railway and river on Langford Road in Newton St Cyres. It was constructed for the Exeter and Crediton Railway using volcanic trap and engineering brick, which includes both red and black varieties, along with granite coping. The embankments that carry Langford Road feature battered abutments made of black brick with square red panels.
The bridge has three spans supported by segmental arches. The piers are designed with three legs and have sturdy bases made of a mix of dressed stone and black brick. The black-brick legs are separated by transverse round-headed arches. The main arches are made of red brick, with volcanic rubble positioned above them. The piers exhibit a pronounced batter and extend above the drip course at road level up to the parapet. The parapet is constructed from volcanic stone and features internal recessed panels decorated with squares of black brick. The granite coping is slightly weathered on the outside and rises slightly to cap the piers.
