Description

Pynes Hill Cottages, located in Upton Pyne, are two cottages that date back to the late 17th century. They are constructed from rendered cob on a stone plinth and feature thatched roofs. The southern cottage, formerly known as No. 1, has a hipped roof on the left side and a gabled roof on the right, along with a large external end stack that includes a bake-oven bulge. The northern cottage, formerly No. 2, has a half-hipped gable and an end stack. Although both cottages have been extended over time, they were originally single-celled structures and together create an L-shaped plan.

Both cottages are two stories high. The front of No. 1 has a door slightly to the right of center, framed by timber jambs and a lintel, with two windows on each floor. The upper-floor window lintels are boxed and integrated into the wall plate. The windows are 19th-century casements with 9 and 12 panes. No. 2 is smaller, with its door situated near the angle of the L-plan.

Inside, both cottages retain large, chamfered beams and a renewed newel staircase. No. 1 features an original fireplace with stone back and jambs, as well as a brick-lined side oven. The roofs are supported by principal rafters and collars. The upper storey of No. 2 retains early floorboards that are broad but of irregular width.
