Description
Downmans consists of two adjoining cottages, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. They are constructed from rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with thatch roofs featuring a brick ridge stack and a rendered stack at the right end. Each cottage is a single room, with No. 1 on the left having a lobby entry and a winder staircase beside the rear side of the stack. No. 2 features a cross-passage with stairs to the rear. Both cottages are two storeys high and have two windows each.
No. 1 has two four-paned sash windows above a sash window with margin glazing bars, and a plank door to the right. There is a 20th-century outshut at the rear with a corrugated asbestos roof. No. 2 features two horizontal sliding sashes with six panes per light above two two-light casements, also with six panes per light, located to the right of a porch that has a slated gabled roof and shaped bargeboards. The door is a four-panelled design, with the upper panels glazed. Painted quoins frame all the openings.
Inside No. 1, there are six-panelled doors leading to the inner lobby and an original winder staircase. Both cottages have chamfered ceiling beams. Although there is no access to the roof space, original trusses appear to be intact.
