Description
The church rooms at the west entrance to the churchyard of the Church of St Peter are a building that was formerly used as a National school room and earlier as Church House. It likely has origins from the early 16th century and was remodelled and restored in 1870. The structure is made of stone rubble and features a slate roof with gable ends. There is a stone rubble stack at the south gable end, which has a drip and a tapered cap.
The building is two storeys high, with a large room above the entrance gates and a room on each side. Each side has a single dormer with a hipped roof and 19th-century three-light transomed mullion windows. The entrance to the covered walkway on the east side has a cambered arch with stone voussoirs, and to the right, there is a two-light casement window with six panes per light. On the west side, there is a 19th-century three-light window to the right of the cambered arched entrance. Access to the first floor is via a doorway with a plank door at the north gable end.
The walkway features a two-panelled door on the south side, along with a timber lintel above a former opening to the left and a four-panelled door on the south side. The exposed joists over the covered walkway have hollow-flanking-ogee moulded soffits with run-out stops. A plaque in the room above notes that "This School House was restored by Frances Torr. 1870."
