Description

Fern Cottage and Rock Cottage are two adjoining cottages dating from the 17th century. Fern Cottage was extended, likely in the 18th century, while Rock Cottage was extended in the 19th century. The cottages are constructed of rendered stone and cob, with slate roofs, although Fern Cottage has an asbestos slate roof. They share a central axial rubble stack and have a rebuilt rear lateral brick stack for Fern Cottage.

The original layout of each cottage consists of a single room on either side of the shared stack. Fern Cottage was expanded, possibly in the 18th century, by adding a two-storey range that is slightly angled from the original structure, with the main room heated by the rear stack. In the 19th century, a right-angled front wing was added to the left end of Rock Cottage, creating an overall L-shaped plan.

Both cottages are two storeys high. Fern Cottage features a three-window range with two-light casements, each having two panes per light. The ground floor includes a two-light horizontal sliding sash window with six panes per light to the left and a four-over-eight paned sash window to the right of a gabled slate roof. This roof is complemented by a timber porch with shaped bargeboards and decorative pendant and lozenge motifs on the pilasters, along with a four-panelled inner door. The front wing of Rock Cottage has two 16-paned sashes above a 12-paned sash window, located to the right of a plank door. Both cottages have an outshut at the rear.

Inside, both cottages retain some 19th-century joinery, including two panelled doors in Fern Cottage. Although there is no access to the roofspace, the feet of the trusses indicate that the roof structure is primarily intact and dates from the late 17th or 18th century.
