Description
This is a church house, later used as a school and now in public use, dating back to around 1510, with subsequent alterations. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble with limestone dressings and long and short quoins. The roof is double Roman tiled with raised coped verges and kneelers. The rectangular building has a west front with a gable, featuring a central, moulded 4-centred arched doorway, now fitted with a C19 door with raised fillets and an ogee hood mould with a finial. There is a single window on either side of the door, and three windows above, all with 2-light leaded casements and stone mullions with hood moulds. The upper central window has cusped lights. A carved shield of arms is positioned above the door, and a small, glazed lancet window sits within the gable, featuring a carved figure depicting St. George and the dragon.
The north elevation includes an external staircase supported by two octagonal piers. This staircase leads to two chamfered 4-centred arched door openings at the upper level, and three similar door openings to the ground floor, now blocked to the right. This elevation also contains four windows per floor, with stone mullioned casements; alternate windows feature 4-centred and cusped lights. A single bay is located to the right of the staircase, with three bays to the left. A coved eaves cornice runs along the top, and a pair of polygonal stone stacks rises from the eaves.
The south elevation displays two blocked doors to the left and two 2-light, 4-centred arched windows to the right of the ground floor. The first floor features two 2-light windows to the left, a 3-light window, two 2-light windows, and one 3-light window – the 3-light windows are wooden replacements. A stack also rises from the eaves to the left. The rear elevation has a large, cusped C19 window within the gable end, which illuminates the former schoolroom. Very large quoin blocks are also visible here.
The interior ground floor shows possible quoin stones in the south wall, visible only from the interior. Timber lintels remain from former door openings on both the north and south sides. A large lintel spans the entire east wall, set within stone jambs for a fireplace, with a possible smoke chamber above. The first floor boasts a fine 11-bay roof featuring principal rafters, arched braces, cambered collars, two rows of purlins, and a ridge purlin. Curved wind braces are present in the lower tier, and a cornice joins the arched braces and collars, which are tenoned into the arched braces.
