Description
The Baptist Chapel, dated 1867 with later additions from 1887, is constructed from snecked sandstone and limestone rubble, with limestone dressings and brick. It features double Roman tiled roofs with raised coped verges and kneelers. The chapel is rectangular in shape, with a hall attached to the rear.
On the north elevation, there is a pointed arched door set in a moulded architrave, complete with a hood mould adorned with rosettes and mask stops, stone plate tracery, and a quatrefoil in the upper section. Above this door is a large octofoil window in a plain surround with a relieving arch, a datestone above, and a finial at the gable. The elevation also showcases long and short quoins, a band course that ramps up to the window, and returns under the eaves on the sides.
The east elevation has four bays featuring round-headed plate-glass sashes with margin glazing, a band course below the cills, and a returned band course that forms a corbel table with corbels and a plinth. The heads of the windows are made of banded limestone and sandstone. To the left, there is a single-storey connecting wing with a parapet and coping, a door with a shouldered architrave, a relieving arch, and a keystone, as well as a round-headed sash window with a banded head and keystone. A second connecting block to the left has a similar door and a round-headed window with ventilation louvres, along with a limestone parapet featuring recessed panels and coping.
To the left of the chapel is a two-storey hall built from snecked rock-faced limestone rubble, which has a gable end to the east featuring two tall lancets and bargeboards, along with dated foundation stones and a central datestone. The left return of the hall has three large four-pane lights in plain architraves, while the rear of the hall has two lancets similar to those on the front.
The west elevation of the chapel includes four round-headed windows with brick heads, lacking band courses, and a single-storey lean-to on the right with two doors and a plate-glass sash. Inside, there is a balustraded dais at the south end of the chapel with twisted balusters and original wooden pews.
