Description
The Beeches is a house built in 1762 for Ephraim Chancellor, with side wings added later and internal alterations made in the 20th century. The exterior is finished in stucco with limestone dressings and features a slate roof with raised coped verges and gable stacks. The building has two storeys and three bays, with the central bay slightly projecting forward. All windows are sashes with slightly cambered heads, and there are multi-pane sash windows with cambered heads in the cellar on both sides. The central entrance consists of a six-panelled door with a decorative fanlight, round head, and triple keystone, surrounded by a moulded frame and topped with an open pediment supported by consoles. The house has a heavy cornice and a pediment above the central bay, which includes a firemark in the tympanum, as well as a parapet and coping. There are single-storey wings on either side featuring a Venetian window with a keystone and a hipped roof behind a coped parapet wall. Access to the front door is via four splayed steps. The left side of the building has two sash windows at attic level. The interior has not been inspected, but it is noted that internal features have been removed or modified since the last listing, with a photograph of the interior available from the National Monuments Record.
