Description

Dumper’s Farmhouse, now a house, likely originated in the 15th century as an open-hall house. It was floored and a hall stack was added in the 16th century, with a kitchen wing constructed to the rear in the 17th century. Further alterations to the front left of the house occurred in the 19th and 20th centuries. The farmhouse is built of sandstone rubble with limestone dressings and brick, featuring pantiled roofs with some double Roman tiles, ridge and gable stacks (some replacements from the 20th century), and raised coped verges.

The building has an irregular T-plan, formed by the rear wing, and is two storeys high with four windows on the front elevation. The ground floor has two replacement 16-pane sashes to the left and two 20-pane sashes to the right, all with segmental heads. A 19 gabled porch with a 20th-century door is positioned off-centre to the left, with a ridge stack to its right. The first floor features four 20-pane sashes under the eaves.

The left return has a 20th-century glazed door to the right, a 2-light casement with a replacement stone mullion to the left and a 9-pane sash at first floor. A sash window is also located to the right, accompanied by a 20th-century conservatory at ground floor. The right return displays an external weathered stack and windows with cusped ogee-headed leaded lights. The ground floor has a single light to the left, a 2-light to the right, while the first floor has a narrow single light to the left and a 2-light to the right. The attic is marked by a single light to the right, along with kneelers.

The rear of the left wing features a 2-light casement at ground floor and under the eaves of different sizes. The right side showcases a catslide roof and a tall, narrow, two-storey brick addition constructed in the 20th century, including a 20th-century door and two windows at ground floor. The first floor of this addition contains a 2-light casement with a segmental head. The rear wing to the left has two 2-light casements at ground floor and one under the eaves, while the right side has a 2-light casement at ground floor and one under the eaves. A single-storey lean-to with a double-Roman tiled roof extends from the rear, featuring a door, curved open projection, and a gable stack.

Inside, the front range contains two rooms, originally part of the open hall, with a passage along the rear. The through passage has stone-flagged flooring, and the end room is located to the left. The front right room has a framed ceiling with four panels, roll moulding, and hollow chamfered beams. The rear beam displays mortices indicative of a former screen, with a wall-plate and a deep chamfer. The room has a stone fireplace with moulded and stopped jambs. The central room mirrors this design, with similar ceiling features and a fine fireplace backing onto the passage. The fireplace is notable for a heavy timber lintel approximately 3 metres long, featuring a cusped trefoil-headed carved panel on the right side (missing from the left). Stone jambs and an oven recess are located on the left, along with a moulded mantel. A winder stair rises to the rear of the centre room. The rear kitchen features narrow chamfered beams and a heavy timber lintel to the fireplace with stone jambs, alongside a 19th-century cast iron oven door. The first floor reveals only three principal members, and the roof, while inaccessible, is reported to contain two smoke-blackened trusses over two rooms to the right.
