Description
Ivy Cottage and Walters Cottage are two adjoining cottages, likely built in the 17th century and extended in the 19th century. They are constructed from rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a slate roof featuring gable ends. The left end has a stone rubble stack with a tapered cap drip and a conical slate roof over a corbelled bread oven, while the right end has a similar stone rubble stack with a tapered cap. The main range is oriented gable end to the road.
Walters Cottage, located at the left end, has a 1½ room plan with a direct entry to a larger room that includes a winder staircase in the rear right corner. Ivy Cottage has a 2 room plan and features a 19th-century gable-ended wing that projects at right angles to the main range, creating an overall T-shape in plan. The cottages are two storeys tall and exhibit asymmetrical fenestration primarily from the 19th century.
Ivy Cottage, facing the roadside, has two 6-pane per light, 2-light casement windows on each floor to the left of the stack at the right gable end. Above a similar casement to the left of the plank door to the 19th-century wing, there are two 8-pane per light, 2-light casements. To the right of the doorway, there is another 2-light casement with 8 panes per light on the return wall of the main range. The interior of Walters Cottage was the only part inspected; although the roofspace was not accessible, the presence of heavy principal beams suggests that the original roof structure is likely intact.
