Description

The Chimneys is a house that was formerly two cottages, dating from the 16th century and later extended and re-roofed, probably in the 18th century. It is constructed of rendered stone and cob, topped with a thatch roof featuring gable ends. The building has two tall front lateral stacks, with the right stack having offsets, both equipped with drips and tapered caps. The original core on the right end consists of a single room adjacent to a wide entrance hall that contains a staircase and a small front lobby room. A rear right-hand thatched wing was added in the 18th or early 19th century, which includes a gable end stack, creating an overall L-shaped plan.

On the left side, there is a single large room with a blocked entry at the left end. The house is two storeys high and has a five-window range featuring 20th-century fenestration, mainly consisting of two-light casements with eight panes per light. There is an offset doorway with a 20th-century door.

Inside, the fireplace associated with the right-hand stack has a flat finely dressed stone instead of the more common lintel, and there is a bread oven made by Fishleys of Fremington. The staircase has been removed from the left-hand rear wall. The principal room on the left end features a single chamfered ceiling beam and a chamfered scroll-stopped fireplace lintel. The structure includes four roughly hewn trusses with side-pegged slightly halved collars and trenched purlins. Upstairs, a deeply splayed window opening in the internal solid cob partition that divides the two former cottages indicates the later construction of the left-hand range.
