Description

Cowley Manor is a large house, now divided into three dwellings, that was remodelled and extended during the 18th and 19th centuries. The house consists of two main blocks running parallel to each other on a southwest/northeast axis. The older, southern block is constructed from Thorverton stone, while the later block is rendered. These blocks are connected by a small, unrendered stone wing that is not bonded into either. A further wing was added to the north in the 19th century. The house is two storeys throughout, with slate, gable-end roofs.

The southern block has an end stack on the left side, and a back, lateral stack which is now visible from a 20th-century porch. The arrangement of the front windows and door, despite alterations, suggests an original three-unit plan. To the left of the doorway, which is centrally located, are single windows on each floor with six-pane casements. The central room has single four-pane casements on each floor. The right-hand room, likely the former parlour, has an early 19th-century twelve-pane casement above a window that has been converted into a garden door. The right-hand gable features a post-1850 canted bay at ground level, with two-light twelve-pane sashes above and a 20th-century attic window.

The northern block, which runs parallel to the first, features an axial stack and two modern brick chimneys. It has 19th-century windows and early 19th-century heavy quoining.

The former parlour of the southern block contains early 19th-century internal shutters, a panelled door, a moulded cornice, and a large 16th-century Thorverton stone fireplace with a four-centred segmental arch and ovolo moulding.
