Description
Forge Cottage is a cottage dating from the 1860s, constructed from stone with brick quoins, window surrounds, and banding, all under a slate roof. The building is L-shaped and two storeys high, with two chimneys. One wing features a half-hipped gable, with gable-end windows set within pointed arches of red and yellow brick. The other wing has a gabled end and contains two windows, the upper window having a steeper pointed arch than the one below. Red brick banding is present throughout. The tympana (triangular spaces) of the upper windows are decorated with red tiles. This is a carefully designed small cottage, demonstrating a sensitive combination of diverse materials—yellow and red brick, limestone, and sandstone, alongside red tiles and grey and blue slates—and a clever application of Gothic detailing on a small, intimate scale. It provides a pleasing contrast to the grey limestone chapel built in the 19th century opposite.
