Description
Glebe House is a house dating from the late 18th century, with a service wing on the right that may be part of an earlier 18th-century structure. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, while the service wing is in English bond. It features a slate double-span hipped roof and a parapet with a moulded wood bracketed cornice. The house has a double depth plan and stands two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay front. The windows are sashes with glazing bars, featuring 12 panes on the ground floor and 6 panes on the first floor, with flat brick arches and plain stone sills. The central entrance has a panelled door flanked by sidelights and topped with a rectangular fanlight, leading to a porch supported by two pairs of wood Tuscan columns that hold up an entablature. The rear elevation has five bays of sash windows, including a semi-circular bay window on the south-west garden side and an early 19th-century wooden veranda. The service wing has irregular window placements.
Inside, the house is largely intact and retains most of its plaster cornices, which vary in design from room to room, mainly featuring acanthus and anthemion motifs. The most notable areas are the hall, stairwell, and upper landing. The hall is accessed through a glazed screen with a large traceried fanlight, with arches supported by fluted pilasters and capitals. The dog-leg staircase has a wreathed rail held up by wrought-iron balusters and is illuminated by a lantern, complemented by a fine plasterwork frieze. The best fireplaces date from the late 19th century and have black marble surrounds. The older part of the house underwent significant alterations in the late 18th and 19th centuries.
