Description
UPTON PYNE UPTON PYNE VILLAGE SX 99 NW 3/52 Pearce's (or Pierce's) Farm - - II Farmhouse. C16 core with additions and alterations of the C17 to C19. Plastered cob, the original thatched gable-ended roof replaced by slates. The main block is of a 3-cell plan with through-passage, with a back wing giving an overall L-shaped plan. There are stone stacks at each end, the larger being at the left (or parlour) end. 2 storeys throughout. 3 window range. The casements to the main front are all C20, but the disposition of the windows is original, the 3 ground- floor windows set close to the ground. As a result of the recent demolition of a lean-to structure at the back, 2 first-floor windows have been exposed, one retaining its C18 leaded casements of 12 panes. The roof ridge is higher over the room to the right of the through passage. There are C19 king-post trusses throughout except over the lower (ie right-hand) end where there survive 2 bays and 2 trusses with massive principals halved, crossed and pegged to support the ridge and with notched, lap-jointed collars. All purlins replaced. The hall ceiling has an elm tree trunk across, chamfered with step-hollow stops. Parlour fireplace retains its Thorverton stone jambs, chamfered with step-stops, with a side oven on the left side. The back wing has a massive, chamfered cross beam, with slighter cross joists decorated with scratch-moulding.
