Description
Great Ley is a 17th-century farmhouse located in Upton Pyne. It is constructed of cob on a stone plinth, with concrete tiles that have replaced the original thatch. The building has an L-shaped plan, featuring a traditional three-room through passage layout with a lateral back stack. A parlour wing with an end stack has been added, which is now partially hidden by a cob outskirt that connects to an adjoining barn.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a three-window range, along with a gabled parlour wing to the left. All windows are 20th-century casements, and there is a 20th-century glazed porch to the left of the centre. Evidence of former screens can be seen on either side of the passage, including a screen groove on a chamfered beam to the left, which is dressed only towards the passage, and doorway notches on the right side.
In the left chamber, near the stairs, there is a surviving stud and panel screen that supports a first-floor post and a wattle partition. The right chamber retains its stone fireplace surround with ovolo mouldings. The ground floor beams are single-chamfered with step-hollow stops. The roof construction in this part of the house features jointed arch, side pegged, with collars and Z-tenons. The fireplace in the parlour wing has jambs made of Thorverton stone with a wooden lintel that is single chamfered with step-hollow stops. Above this fireplace, at the first-floor level and served by the same end stack, is another fireplace with a wooden lintel, chamfered stone jambs, and wave moulding.
