Description

Little Nettacott is a house, originally a farmhouse, dating from the 17th century. It is built of rendered cob on a stone plinth, with a hipped thatched roof. The building was initially a three-unit, cross-passage plan, but has been much altered, with a 20th-century extension added to the left-hand side, likely indicating the location of one of the original rooms. The front elevation has an irregular arrangement of windows, with three windows to each floor, excluding the 20th-century extension; the ground floor window in the centre marks the site of the original entrance. All the windows are 20th-century casements. The current entrance is at the extreme right-hand end of the building, set between two stone buttresses. There are two axial stacks; one is located to the right and backs onto the former through-passage, while the other marks the division between the middle room and the 20th-century extension. The rear elevation has three irregularly placed windows, one at first-floor level.

Inside, the right-hand room contains a single-chamfered beam and a large fireplace with a wooden lintel and Thorverton stone jambs, all featuring ovolo mouldings. The left-hand room also has a chamfered main beam. A massive trunk beam is positioned at door lintel level, dividing it from the 20th-century room, and a fireplace has been removed from this space. Above the existing fireplace, slightly offset, is a first-floor fireplace with chamfered lintel and jambs. The roof is of five bays, with principal rafters (possibly jointed crucks) and a closed hip cruck at the right-hand end; some rafters show evidence of soot-blackening.
