Description

Shute House is an early 19th-century farmhouse. It is constructed of stuccoed stone or brick, with a slate roof. The building has a double depth plan, originally comprising three rooms to the front, with a stair hall directly accessible from the front door, to the right of centre. Rendered brick stacks are located to the rear of the central room and in the end walls; a stack is towards the front to the left and another in the rear to the right. The house faces south-east, and the roof is hipped on both sides. The corners are accentuated with rusticated quoins. The front façade features four windows, with a partly glazed 6-panel door. A small, gabled timber porch with shaped bargeboards and panelled, glazed sides provides a sheltered entrance. The windows are timber sashes, mostly with eight panes per sash and horns. Tripartite sashes, each with six panes and horns, flank the front door. Shaped eaves brackets are present on the front of the building. Casement windows are found at the rear. The interior retains original features, including a straight flight staircase with an open string, carved stair brackets, stick balusters, and a mahogany handrail.
