Description

Little Newcombes is a large farmhouse built in the mid-19th century, incorporating elements from an earlier building and featuring 20th-century extensions. It was constructed for the Passmore family and is primarily made of stuccoed volcanic stone, cob, and brick, topped with slate roofs. The farmhouse has an unusual, sprawling layout consisting of two distinct blocks joined by a solid party wall. It is two stories tall with attic rooms in the higher, right-hand (eastern) wing. The left wing has a double-span roof that contains the staircase and kitchen/services, while the right wing, which faces south, includes the drawing room and an inner room, with 20th-century extensions on either side and at the rear.

The front of the building has four windows. To the left of center, there is a six-panel door leading to the stair hall, topped by a rectangular fanlight and sheltered by a Tuscan porch supported by granite columns. To the right, there are two French windows. All the large sash windows feature glazing bars and margin-lights, along with large sliding Venetian shutters. The right side has shaped eaves-brackets and a dentil cornice. The right gable is exposed brick with round-headed windows in the attic and first-floor corridor, and a stucco pilaster at the rear is decorated with an acanthus motif below the dentils, complemented by plain barge-boards. The left gable is also exposed brick, featuring gauged brick arches above the openings, including sashes with glazing bars and a rear door with a rectangular fanlight.

Inside, there is a curving geometric staircase with an open string, a mahogany handrail, stick balusters, and panelled sides.
