Description

NEWTON ST CYRES SX 89 NE 5/13 Little Newcombes - - II Large farmhouse. Mid-C19 incorporating elements of earlier building and with C20 extensions. Built for Passmore family. Mostly stuccoed volcanic stone, cob and brick with slate roofs. Eccentric rambling plan comprising two distinct blocks set end to end with solid party wall. 2-storeys with attic rooms in higher, right-hand (eastern) wing. Double span roof to left wing housing stair and kitchen/services; drawing room and inner room to right face south with C20 extensions each side and to rear. Overall 4-window front. Six-panel door to stair-hall, with rectangular fanlight and Tuscan porch on granite columns is left of centre. 2 French windows to right. All large sash windows have glazing bars with margin-lights. Large sliding Venetian shutters. Shaped eaves-brackets and dentil cornice to right. Right gable of exposed brick with round-headed windows to attic and first floor corridor; stucco pilaster to rear is panelled with acanthus-motif below dentils; and plain barge-boards to gable. Left double-gable also of exposed brick with gauged brick arches to apertures - sashes with glazing bars and rear door with rectangular fan. Interior: curving geometric stair, open string, mahogany handrail, stick balusters and panelled sides.
